A1 RESURFACING: COCKBURNSPATH, TOWER FARM & COLDINGHAM

December 1, 2021

  • Overnight roadworks 14-17 December 2021

The A1 is set to benefit from an improved road surface, with four nights of resurfacing works in three locations set to begin on Tuesday 14 December.

The works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland resurface 800m of carriageway at Cockburnspath, Tower Farm and Coldingham, creating smoother and safer journeys for motorists.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers as well as the travelling public, sections of the A1 will be closed each night from Tuesday 14 December to Thursday 16 December, with a lane closure in place on Friday 17 December:

  • On the night of Tuesday 14 December, the A1 will be closed between Edinburgh Road Junction and Cockburnspath Roundabout from 19:30 until 06:00. A signed diversion will be in place via Edinburgh Road, adding approximately 0.3 miles and 2 minutes to affected journeys.
  • On Wednesday 15 December and Thursday 16 December, the A1 will be closed at Tower Farm, with a diversion signposted from the Berwick-upon-Tweed bypass to Old Craighall roundabout on the A720, via the A6105, A697 and A68. This diversion will add approximately 5 miles and 25 minutes to affected journeys
  • On Friday 17 December the A1 will remain open, however, a lane closure will be in place at Coldingham with temporary traffic lights. Due to the nature of the works, the northbound access to the A1107 at its junction with the A1 will be closed. A diversion via the southbound A1107 (Eyemouth) will be in place, adding approximately 1 mile and 8 minutes to affected journeys

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Emergency services and other relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential that we close the road during these works to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
