A1 RESURFACING AT THREE LOCATIONS

Update: Work on the A1 at Houndswood will require an additional night on the southbound carriageway. This is take place on Thursday 28 March. Works at South of Bankton Junction remain unaffected. Updated dates below.

  • Overnight works from 11 to 22 & 28 March 2024

The A1 is set to benefit from carriageway improvements at three locations, with Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland planning ten nights of resurfacing works at North Granthouse, Houndwood and South of Bankton.

The works will take place from 11 to 22 & 28 March with the following road and carriageway closures in place between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00 each night:

  • Monday 11 – Thursday 21 March (except Friday to Sunday nights): The A1 will be closed in both directions between Ayton Junction and Tower Farm Junction. A diversion will be signposted via the A1107, adding an estimated 9 minutes and 1.2 miles onto affected journeys.
  • Wednesday 20 – Friday 22 March: The northbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed at Abbotsview Junction. A will be signposted between Abbotsview Junction and Bankton Junction via the A199, A6137, B1377 and A198, adding an estimated 8 minutes and 2 miles onto affected journeys.
  • Thursday 28 March: The southbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed between tower Farm Junction and Ayton Junction. A signed diversion will be posted via the A1107 adding 9 minutes and 1.2 miles onto affected journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimize the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
