• Overnight road closures from 16 April to 13 May 2026

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out essential resurfacing works at three locations on the A1 between Gladsmuir and Abbotsview Junctions.

The works will take place from Thursday 16 April until Wednesday 13 May, with overnight carriageway closures in place between 19:30 and 06:00 each weeknight. No works will take place on Saturday or Sunday nights. Works will begin at a later time of 22:00 on Thursday 7 May due to elections taking place.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place during these closures as follows:

• A1 Gladsmuir to Oaktree southbound: Closure between Gladsmuir Junction and Oaktree Junction. Road users will be diverted via Coal Road, the A199 and the B6471, adding approximately 0.2 miles and two minutes to journeys.
• A1 south of Oaktree southbound: Closure between Oaktree Junction and Abbotsview Junction. Diversion via the B6471 and A199 will be in place, adding approximately 0.2 miles and three minutes.
• A1 Abbotsview to Oaktree northbound: Closure between Abbotsview Junction and Oaktree Junction. Diversion via the A199, will add approximately 0.1 miles and two minutes to journeys.

The works will see sections of the carriageway resurfaced between Tranent and Haddington, improving the overall condition of the road and providing a safer, smoother journey for road users.

Due to the road layout and high traffic volumes on this section of the A1, full closures are required to ensure the safety of those using and working on the road.  Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times.

Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works.

“It is essential for the safety of our workforce and road users that we implement overnight closures while these works are undertaken.

“We’ve planned the works overnight to minimise disruption, and we thank road users and the local community for their patience and understanding.”

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.
