A1 OLD CRAIGHALL RESURFACING AND BRIDGE WORKS

August 1, 2025

  • Overnight carriageway closures 20 August to 12 September 2025

The A1 trunk road near Old Craighall is set to benefit from resurfacing and bridge joint replacement works, with Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland planning 18 nights of works on Monday to Friday nights between 20 August and 12 September.

For the safety of motorists and the workforce, carriageway closures will be in place between 20:30 and 06:00 each night. No works will take place on Saturday or Sunday nights.

  • On Monday to Friday nights from 20 to 29 August, the A1 will be closed northbound between Wallyford and Old Craighall Junctions, with a diversion route signposted via the A6094, A68 and A720. This diversion will add approximately 2.2 miles and 6 minutes to affected journeys.
  • On the night of Monday 1 September, the A1 northbound will again be closed between Wallyford and Old Craighall Junctions, and there will also be a partial closure of Old Craighall Roundabout restricting access to the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass. Road users wishing to join the A720 will be diverted between Old Craighall Roundabout and Millerhill Junction through Wallyford via the A6094 and A68. This diversion will add 5 minutes and 3.6 miles onto affected journeys.
  • On Tuesday 2 September, the A1 southbound will be closed between Old Craighall and Dolphingstone Junctions, with a signed diversion route between Milton Road junction and Dolphingstone Junction via the A199 through Musselburgh. This diversion will add approximately 7 minutes but no additional distance to affected journeys.
  • On weekday nights from Wednesday 3 to Friday 12 September, the A1 southbound will be closed between Old Craighall and Wallyford Junctions, with a signed diversion route in place via the A720, A68 and A6094. This diversion will add approximately 2 miles and 7 minutes to affected journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing and bridge joint improvements will help to address defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
