£750,000 resurfacing improvements planned for two locations on the A1

September 1, 2020

Overnight roadworks commence Sunday 13 September

Motorists using the southbound A1 between Bankton and Abbotsview are set to benefit from smoother and safer journeys, as £750,000 worth of resurfacing improvements over 3.5km of carriageway begins later this month.

Overnight roadworks will begin on Sunday 13 September and are programmed to take twelve nights to complete. To ensure the safety of roadworkers and the traveling public, carriageway closures will be required between 19:30 and 06:00 each night, with work due to be completed by 06:00 on Saturday 3 October:

  • The southbound A1 will be closed between Oaktree and Abbotsview from 19:30 until 06:00 on the nights of 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 22 September. A diversion route will be signposted via the A199, adding approximately 2.1 miles and 10 minutes to affected journeys on these nights.
  • The southbound A1 will then be closed between Bankton and Gladsmuir from 19:30 until 06:00 on the nights of 23, 24, 29 and 30 September and 1, 2 October. A diversion route will be signposted via the A199, adding approximately 0.5 miles and 2 minutes to affected journeys.

These projects have been planned in consultation with the local authority and emergency services.

Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s South East Operating Company Representative, said: “These essential surfacing projects will improve the condition of the road surface and road safety across these two sections of the A1, benefitting road users for years to come.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we work on these projects. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
