Since August 2011 BEAR Scotland has been responsible for operating and maintaining the 18 kilometres of motorway on the M80 between Stepps and Haggs, from Junction 2 Robyroyston to Junction 8, just north of Haggs.
The M80 stretch includes the Moodiesburn Bypass, bypassing the communities of Muirhead, Chryston and Moodiesburn, and links with the previously upgraded Auchenkilns Junction on the M73.

The M80 Stepps to Haggs project has dramatically reduced traffic congestion and journey times for drivers on one of Scotland’s busiest roads. The scheme won the prestigious Saltire Society Civil Engineering Award in 2013.
The new motorway has improved the existing A80 road that forms part of a key strategic network linking Glasgow, Stirling and the North East of Scotland. The A80 previously carried large volumes of commuter and freight traffic, with frequent congestion occurring during peak hours. The Scottish Government procured the major improvement project through a Design, Build, Finance and Operate contract. The project includes 18km of new motorway, seven new junctions, drainage systems and new access roads.
BEAR Scotland was appointed to Operate & Maintain this section of the M80 by Highway Management Scotland (HMG). The road has a live traffic flow of up to 73,000 vehicles per day and is one of the busiest routes in Scotland.
The M80 has its own team of dedicated staff to ensure it continues to operate safely. Based in Chryston, the team oversee everything from carriageway maintenance, cyclic maintenance, inspections, defect repairs, design of schemes and winter operations such as salt treatments.
The M80 also has its own Trunk Road Incident Support Service (TRISS), who are available everyday on the network to help ensure traffic keeps flowing. The TRISS teams help take care of drivers and give them reassurance if they get into difficulty. Upon their arrival at an incident the TRISS teams make the site safe for road users, and keeps drivers safe whilst they are waiting for either the emergency services or their own breakdown organisations to respond. The aim of this service is to deal quickly and effectively with incidents on the motorway and trunk road network. This has a dramatic impact on clearing congestion, improving journey times and keeps our customers out of harms way.
Did you know: The M80 team are responsible for clearing litter from the verges and central reservation. The task is a dangerous one, with teams often spending long hours clearing litter thrown from passing vehicles. The team work in collaboration with Transport Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Zero Waste Scotland to limit the amount of litter left by motorists on Scotland’s trunk roads. In 2019 the team collected over 4,000 bags of litter from the M80.
