Major Works on M8 Junction 3 Slip Road

The refurbishment of the bridge that carries the eastbound slip road off the M8 at Junction 3 near Livingston over the A899 began early in 2023.

The reinforced concrete structure, which was originally built in 1970, is benefitting from a £1.3m upgrade in line with modern standards, ensuring its long-term use and safety for motorists.

BEAR Scotland is leading this project as part of its responsibility for the South East Trunk Road Network on behalf of Transport Scotland. Specialist contractor, Freyssinet, is responsible for the delivery of key elements of the project including the concrete refurbishment and the cathodic protection.

Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “In 2023 the initial phase of this bridge’s refurbishment was completed, including extensive repairs to concrete edge beams, replacement of parapets, renewal of concrete deck waterproofing and improvements to deck drainage.

“Phase 2 includes concrete repairs and bearing replacement on the bridge’s central piers.  First steps will include setting up a compound next to the bridge and construction of temporary foundations to allow propping of the bridge during the replacement of its bearings.

“To facilitate the remaining works and provide a safe working environment, lane closures in both directions will then be in place until autumn 2024, including partial closure of the lanes approaching the A899 southbound on the Dechmont Roundabout.

“These lane closures are not expected to cause significant disruption, however we recommend checking local travel information, especially during peak times.

“We’re grateful to road users, local businesses and the local community for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential works to extend the service life of this bridge.”

Updating the community

BEAR Scotland has liaised closely with West Lothian Council and other key stakeholders in the planning of this bridge refurbishment. The local community will be kept up to date with the progress of the project and an education outreach programme with local schools is also underway.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information and allowing extra time for their journey.
