£1.45M SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR FOUR LOCATIONS ON A83 BETWEEN KINGLAS AND CLACHAN

Works set to begin from Tuesday 12 January over seven weeks

Four sections of the A83 between Kinglas and Clachan are set to benefit from an improved road surface as surfacing improvements are set to get underway next week.

The £1.45M project will see almost 5km of the A83 resurfaced, improving safety and ride comfort for road users.

The improvements are scheduled to begin on Tuesday 12 January and are expected to take place over seven weeks with all work scheduled to be completed by Friday 25 February, subject to weather conditions.

The intended programme of works is as follows:

  • A83 Butterbridge to A815 Junction – Tuesday 12 January to Thursday 11 February (23 nights, excluding Friday and Saturday nights)

A 10mph convoy system will be in place between 7pm and 7am each night.

  • A83 Corrranbuie – Sunday 14 February to Wednesday 17 February (four nights)

Due to the narrow carriageway widths at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure for safety between 8pm and 5am each night.  As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site under a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

  • A83 Clachan – Thursday 18 February to Monday 22 February (three nights, excluding Friday and Saturday nights)

  • A83 Meall Mhor – Tuesday 23 February to Thursday 25 February (two nights)

Due to the narrow carriageway widths at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure for safety between 8pm and 5am each night.  As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site under a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Motorists are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

At each site, traffic management will be removed outwith working hours, however a temporary 30mph speed limit will remain in place, as traffic will be travelling over a temporary surface.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance, will be in force to protect teams and ensure they remain safe at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This surfacing project across these four locations on the A83 will help address any defects and greatly improve the surface for motorists.

“The overnight closures are essential for ensuring the safety of road workers and motorists due to the narrow widths of the road at these locations. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the work overnight and avoiding working on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these projects. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
