BEAR supports young people into employment29 Nov 2011

BEAR Scotland are working with the UK’s leading children’s charity Barnardo’s in
an employment initiative to assist disadvantaged young people into work. We have
been working with Barnardo’s since June 2010 and have supported young people
through a 26 week work placement scheme.
The placement scheme is structured to ensure that the candidates receive adequate
training and support as well as on the job experience. During the first half of the
scheme the candidates attend a Barnardo’s training centre one day a week to receive
accredited training in an area relevant to the highway maintenance industry. The
candidates then move on to complete the second half of the scheme in full time
supported-wage employment with BEAR Scotland. The employment initiative is
partially funded by the European Social Fund and the Fairer Scotland Fund.
Our current placements have been working between our Bilston, Dundee and Perth
depots and we hope to recruit further candidates for our Aberdeen and Inverness
depots. Five of our original placements have remained in employment with BEAR
Scotland for over a year and they have recently started a Modern Apprenticeship in
Highway Maintenance at Telford College.
